Bill's Place (Dan Auerbach SXSW 2009)

Bill’s Place

Saturday’s SXSW festivities had been planned around seeing Dan Auerbach who, as you should know, is one half of the Black Keys. He has a new solo record out (Keep it Hid...pick it up, it's a real treat) and has been touring with Hacienda from San Antonio. He played with Hacienda on Wed at the Parish…a show Dale and I Unfortunately had to miss. Rachel, Juan, and Reyna went to that show and said it was great. I was not surprised.
**Dan Auerbach also produced and was a guest musician on Hacienda's debut album, Loud Is The Night.)

Both Juan and I saw on Dan’s (I will now refer to him by his first name only because I feel like I can) myspace page that he would be playing an after party at Bill’s place on Cesar Chavez. We knew we had to be there. Plus, I ran into Dante of Hacienda and he told me the same thing about the after party. Wooooah nelly!

Flash forward to Saturday around 6:30. We knew that the music started at Bill’s place at 8:00 and thought that we had to get out there early to ensure that we saw Dan. Reyna called info to get the number for Bill’s place. We wanted to be sure Dan was playing before we went way out to East Cesar Chavez. Information did not have the number. I could not find it on google. We drove up and down Cesar Chavez and could not find the bar, Bill’s place. We asked some people at a used appliance “store” and they did not know where it was. We asked a cab driver and he said he had been driving these Austin Streets for many years and had never seen “Bill’s Place.”

Finally, Dale spots a driveway to the address we had for Bill’s place. There was a sign that said “Project Imagination.” We drove in and there was this dude in a yellow cap and a dirty white shirt that he had written “Shut the Fuck Up” on with a magic marker. Nobody else was there. I have to admit, the scene was a little daunting. I told Dale to back the car up for fear that I would be raped and murdered if we stayed. Too late, Juan and Reyna pulled in behind us blocking our escape route. (Honestly, Dale would not have vacated the place without further inspection.)

Dale chatted with Mr. Yellow cap and found out that we were at the right place. Mr. Yellow cap had no idea who Dan was, but knew there was going to be bands playing at the property. We told him that the "venue" was not listed on the SXSW schedule and he said something along the lines of, "yeah, It's all Adam's thing. If you know Adam then you are in the know." We did not know Adam but we acted like we did.

Bill’s place was literally Bill’s place. Some old dude named Bill lives there. We parked our cars and crossed the treacherous Cesar Chavez. Juan and Reyna nearly got hit by a car. We ended up befriending the people that almost killed them. We also met more occupants of the property. I believe we met Bill himself, a nice older fella who talked to us for a bit before we explored the property. Little did we know what we were getting into.

How ‘bout some pictures of Bill’s place?

The Stage. That is the first bands gear. Small, no? Many bands played that night. All of them were good. Some were great.

Here is a perspective shot so that you can get a better idea of the size of the stage. Also, I think Reyna and I look pretty cute.

Ok, so there was this little shack at the back of the property. Turns out, the groundskeepe,Mr. Yellow Cap (he turned out to be the nicest guy), and his lady friend live there.

That is the main house. There was a deck, the stage, a bar, and a bathroom.

Juan, Reyna and Lee enjoying the beautiful scenery. When we were sitting on the deck, we looked up and saw a plethera of monarch butterflies just fluttering around the trees.

Ah, here we have Mr. Yellow Cap, his lady friend, and the two hippies that are the sole members of the band The Golden Animals -from California.

Juan, Dale, and Adam. Adam turned out to be the promoter of the showcase.

Enjoying the fire that Dale and Mr. Yellow Cap made.

Would you look at that? Tirzah and Josh joined us...though they could not stay late into the night (early morning, really).

Whew! I'm spent. I'll bring you part II and possibly III after I catch some sleep.
